Sustainable Living on the Swale

Oh no! Styrofoam

The new printer was a good eco-friendly choice:

  • Energy Star Qualified
  • RoHS Compliant
  • Recyclable Product
  • Ecotank- to reduce consumption of ink cartridges

However there was one vexing problem:

  • Part of the packaging included styrofoam form-fitting blocks

PlanetCon 2018: A Community Recycling and Swap Event– planned by Westside Master Recyclers with support of Washington County Solid Waste & Recycling and the Hillsboro School District.

The event was a perfect solution for the printer packing Styrofoam/polystyrene problem -and- as it turned out, for several other recyling challenges well.

Cars lined up to drop off styrofoam/polystyrene chunks. Four gigantic dumpsters were filled during the three hour long event.

A collage of opportunity was organized…

Information Tables-

Information tables were enthusiastically shared by a variety of community organizations to assist in educating the public about ways to reduce, reuse, recycle, and rethink. The idea? Enable folks  to find inspiration for incorporating more eco-friendly habits into our lives.

Plastic Bag Collection

One-use plastic bags are a pervasive and pesky problem for the environment. They are not eligible for curb-side recycling.

What to do?

The best answer is to avoid them as much as possible (example, take reusable shopping bags with you all the time).

Next best answer- recycle at events like this, or in the bins provided in the lobby of many of the local grocery store chains.

Christmas Tree String Lights Collection

Did you throw some of these away after the holidays? Take note for next year… strings of Christmas lights can be recycled! Just look at all the bag-fulls that were collected in this three hour long event.

Winter Clothing Donation

Clothing in good condition and clean was collected to assist those in need in Washington County. PlanetCon modeled a caring way to put  the “Reuse” eco-friendly concept into practice.

Holiday Swap

Did you have too many decorations? Or… maybe need something for next year? Then the Holiday Swap tables would have answered your wishes.

Repair Fair / Worm Bin Boothes

Two hands-on ways to add eco-friendly activity to your life were highlighted:

  • how to create a worm bin
  • how to keep items out of the landfill through repairing them
