Barred Owl

However, this generalist predator hunts by waiting on a high perch at night, or by flying through the woods and swooping down on prey. Barred owls principally feed on voles, mice, and shrews, but will also hunt rats, squirrels, rabbits, bats, moles, opossums. They are also known to prey upon other birds, and, occasionally, fish, turtles, frogs, snakes, large insects, worms.

This medium-sized owl is named for the dark horizontal bars on its breast and the vertical streaks on the belly. The rest of the body is heavily streaked, spotted, and varigated brown, white , and buff overall.

The Barred Owl has been known to live up to 24 years in the wild and 23 years in captivity.
