White-breasted Nuthatch

Why does this species often travel with small mixed flocks of birds in the winter?

Traveling with chickadees and titmice makes food easier to find and because more birds can keep an eye out for predators. White- breasted Nuthatches use an extra long hind-toe claw to hop down trees head first to see prey birds hopping up the tree miss.

A group is known as a “jar” of nuthatches.
