How do Red-winged Blackbirds keep their nests from becoming infected with parasites that could kill baby birds?
They prevent infection by building a new nest for each of the 2-3 broods they raise each season. Males defend territory by singing from the tops of the surrounding vegetation. Calls are repeated as brilliant red and yellow wing bars are displayed.
A group is called a “cloud”, “cluster”, or “merl” of blackbirds.
