Red-breasted Sapsucker

Why are Rufous Hummingbirds associated with this sapsucker?

They nest near sap wells tapped out by the Red-breasted Sapsucker, and may follow the woodpecker during the day to feed at the wells the sapsucker keeps flowing. Also important because the cavity nests excavated by this sapsucker are subsequently used by other non-excavating cavity dwellers.

You may think it’s funny to know a group is referred to as a “slurp” of sapsuckers.
