Wood Duck

What do hatchlings do after they are 24 hours old?

They leave the nest cavity… often jumping up to 30 feet to the ground or water to follow their mother… never to return to the nest again. Wood Ducks were hunted nearly to extinction at the turn of the 19th century, but with management, they have made a come-back to over a million in North America.

Collectively known as a “brace”, “flush”, “paddling”, “raft”, or “team” of ducks.
